Biography
Niels Bohr was born in Copenhagen Denmark on October 7, 1885. Bohr became interested in sciences at a young age due to his well-educated parents. He was very absorbed in physics and he received his doctorate after years of school at Copenhagen University in 1911. Then in 1912, Niels Bohr was working for J.J. Thomson. Through this he was introduced to Ernest Rutherford. Ernest Rutherford's discovery of the nucleus and development of an atomic model sparked an interest in Bohr for the atomic theory, model and atoms. Bohr began to study the properties of atoms.
Bohr's atomic Model
Bohr's atomic model is one of the biggest achievements in modern physics. In 1913, Bohr created a model which had an atom as a small positively charged nucleus which has surrounding orbiting electrons. Bohr was the first to discover that electrons travel in a different way through orbit around the nucleus. Bohr also discovered the number of electrons orbiting the nucleus determines the property of an element. The element Bohrium (Bh, 107) on the periodic table of elements was named after him. Bohr won a Nobel Prize in result to his discoveries in 1922.
"Every great and deep difficulty bears in itself its own solution. It forces us to change our thinking in order to find it." ~ Niels Bohr
