Dalton's Biography
John Dalton is a famous English scientist who is best known for his atomic theory. Democritus, who appears on a page prior to this one was the first person to come up with the word atom. But Dalton actually was able to make the idea of an atom into the "solid foothold as a fundamental chemical object." (cite A) Although Dalton is most famous for his Atomic Theory he was also the contributor to the discovery of many other important assets in chemistry.
Dalton's Atomic Theory
The current atomic theory now is a bit more intricate than Dalton's theory as it has evolved over time but the main focus of his theory remains in today's theory and understanding of the atom. Dalton did not name his atomic model as well. Dalton publicized and devloped his theory/model in the early 1800's.
John Dalton's Atomic Theory
1) All matter is made of tiny particles called atoms that are indivisible.
2) All atoms of a given element are identical.
3) Atoms of different elements are different in mass and in properties.
4) Atoms can combine into a ratio to form a compound. These atoms can be separated, combined, or rearranged in chemical reactions.
Later though, parts 1 and 2 were proven incorrect in the future by other famous contributors to today's chemistry foundation.
